Alpe d'Huez is perched on
a plateau with one of the best sunshine records in the Alps. A modern lively
resort, it has a lot to offer. The skiing is top quality, whilst on the
mountain you can also enjoy snow shoe walks, paragliding skidoos and ice
climbing.

There is extensive off-piste skiing, the world's
longest ski run at 16 km, plenty of intermediate runs and good nursery slopes. In
fact, this is perhaps France's number one resort for beginners. Snowboarders will
find plenty of free-riding mountainside, but make sure you seek advice before trying
the back-country terrain. The main Visalp ski pass includes many of the resorts
facilities and the ski bus.
The village has skating and curling rinks, swimming
pools and a sports complex with 26 activities on offer, which include climbing,
golf, archery, tennis, aerobics and martial arts. The resort also offers flying
trips and lessons, helicopter flights, snow driving instruction and ice quads. Aprs
ski is lively with plenty of bars, restaurants, music pubs, discos and night clubs.
There's a cinema which shows
English language films.
Access: The nearest
airports are at Grenoble (99km / 62 miles) and Lyon (150km /93 miles) with the international
airport at Geneva 220km (138 miles) away. There is no nearby rail station, the closest
is Grenoble, 63km
(40 miles) away via the A 480 motorway (Vizille exit).
There is a regular bus service from Grenoble and taxis are also available. Drivers
should have chains available when snowy for the ascent up to Alpe d'Huez.
There is extensive outdoor car parking and about 600 indoor parking spaces. A free
shuttle bus service runs from early morning to late evening throughout the resort.
