Chamonix in summer

A unique experience is a trip with the cable car up the 3842 m highChamonix town Aiguille du Midi. Chamonix was originally known for its mountaineering, and it offers some of the most challenging climbs in Europe. There are also a number of hikes suitable for all levels of ability. The swimming pool, tennis, golf are further attractions.

Chamonix in winter

Chamonix, together with the other resorts in the valley, is a winter-sport centre of superlatives. 54 ski lifts and cable cars, with 130 km of pistes in the Mont-Blanc region. Ski schools with 220 instructors, children's ski Chamonix in Winterschool, nursery for children from one year. 50 km of cross country skiing, numerous ski hikes, toboggan run, ice skating, curling.

Access: Chamonix is one of the easiest resorts in the Alps to reach; despite its high altitude skiing the resort itself is not terribly high and is close to the Mont Blanc Tunnel so there is a four lane road running right up to Chamonix which is always well maintained. The driving time from Calais is about 8 hours without stops.

The resort also boasts probably the best rail connections of any ski resort outside Japan, with a TGV high speed link via Saint Gervais travelling at around 170 mph (270 kph).  It's possible to catch the TGV 'Snow Special' in Paris on a Friday evening and be in the resort at just after 11pm.

There are bus connections from Geneva.  Geneva is the closest international airport, only 96 km (60 miles) north west, a 95 minute drive. Low-cost airlines fly to Chambery (90 miles) and Lyon (140 miles).
