Lech resort
information: 1450 - 2450 metres.

Lech and neighbouring Zurs are amongst the smartest resorts
in Austria, boasting no fewer than six five-star hotels. But the residents
of these establishments are joined during the day by a wider cross-section
of winter sports enthusiasts who make the bus journey from St Anton, with
which the resorts share a hands-free lift pass. The reason for this is that
the skiing here is much easier than the tough slopes above St Anton.
Lech remains a traditional village. 200 metres higher is
the satellite development of Oberlech, which provides a safe and car-free
centre for families with small children, and the hotels are ideally placed
for the skiing.
Zrs is a collection of four- and five-star hotels in an isolated position on
the Flexen Pass, connected with Lech by free ski bus. The village lacks
Lech's charm, although resort-level snow is guaranteed into spring. Zug, 3km
by road through the woods from Lech and fully integrated into the lift
system, offers rural tranquillity.
The resorts share a varied and extensive ski area, although advanced skiers
will be more interested in the abundant off-piste and ski-touring
opportunities of St Anton. The car park at Alpe Rauz is 20 minutes drive
from Lech and provides a back-door entrance into St Anton's ski area, which
can also be reached by the regular and comfortable postbus.
33 lifts: 4 gondolas, 18
chairlifts, 11 draglifts. Alberg Ski Pass area: 82 lifts: 10 gondolas, 38
chairlifts, 34 draglifts.
Access:
The closest major
international airport to Lech is Zurich which is 200km (124 miles)
away. Innsbruck airport is closer at 120km (75 miles).
Low-cost flights also
operate to Friedrichshafen 75 miles away on Lake Constance.
The nearest rail station is at Langen (17km /10 miles) to which there is a
regular bus link or there are taxis at any time. For drivers, the
resort is keen to encourage visitors to park their cars on arrival and not
use them again until they leave, if possible. A fleet of seven
new easy-to-board buses run up to 7.30pm daily along three routes linking
Zug, Zrs, Stubenbach and all other key points in the Lech valley.
After 7.30 and until 4am a fleet of multiple occupancy taxi vehicles known
as 'James' are available. There are also two large underground car
parks with 200 and 600 vehicle capacities with a third smaller option for a
further 25 vehicles as well as a further 350 space daytime-only carpark.
The resort is normally easy to reach from the main
