Originally a small farming village, Les Contamines has
developed into a significant spa and sport resort in the last few years,
without having lost any of its charm. It is situated in a tributary valley
of the Chamonix valley, 13 km south of St-Gervais. Several discotheques,
numerous restaurants and bars, as well as a cinema are available.
Access:
The nearest airport is
Geneva, 60km (38 miles) away. Other options are Lyon and the smaller
airports at Annecy and Chambery. Rail access takes you to St Gervais-Le
Fayet station 12 km (7.5 miles) from the resort with direct TGV service from
Paris every weekend in the winter. Coach, minibus and taxi links to
the station are available.
Drivers from the north should take the A6 autoroute to Macon Nord, then A40
towards Geneva, then the A43 Autoroute Blanche to the Passy exit, an easy 12
km from the resort, although chains should be carried in case of heavy
snowfall.
Les Contamines in summer
Les Contamines has an interesting array of activities: 8
tennis courts, minigolf, riding centre. Hiking in the nature reserve of the
Vallee du Bonnant, mountaineering tours and alpine tours. The cable cabins
of Signal and Gorge take you up to numerous other hikes.
Les Contamines in winter
This sunny, snow-covered skiing region, lies on the Col du
Joly. 120 km of downhill runs in the linked Evasion ski area, which can be
mastered by the average skier without problem, linked by 24 mountain lifts
with a capacity of 24'000 pers./hr. Ski school with 50 instructors,
children's ski school for over 4's, kindergarten for children of 18 months
to 7 years, baby-club for babies of 3 - 18 months, 25 km of cross country
ski trail, natural ice rink, "half pipe" run. Torchlight descents by the ski
instructors. Snow scooters by night, dog drawn sleigh rides.
